What is a (DWT) Dynamic Web Template?

A Dynamic Web Template is an HTML-based master copy of a Web page that you can create to contain settings, formatting, and page elements such as text, graphics, page layout, styles, and regions of a Web page that can be modified. You can attach a Dynamic Web Template to the pages in a Web site, and that template defines the layout for those pages.

How do I use Dynamic Web Templates?

By creating a Dynamic Web Template, you can make regions on attached pages available for other authors to add and modify content, while preventing changes to other regions on the same page. This provides you with control to preserve the layout of the pages and the template itself. When you update the content in a Dynamic Web Template, you can update the attached Web pages simultaneously.

You can use any number of Dynamic Web Templates in a Web site, and you can attach a Dynamic Web Template to as many pages as you like. There are no special template storage restrictions, so you can save your Dynamic Web Template (.dwt) files to any location.

Using Dynamic Web Templates

Hopefully our video dealing with Dynamic Web Templates will answer your questions. DWT’s are a preference, not a necessity. Some folks like to use DWT’s as it does stream line the development process, prevents newer users from distorting the table layouts on the page, and helps for site wide page updates.

Some web masters prefer to not use DWT’s even though their software allows for it. DWT’s are rigid, as you can only edit the ‘editable’ regions on the attached template pages. This limits the flexibility of these pages.

Package Definitions:

Package A:
Recommended for FrontPage 2003, Expression Web Designer **(DWT)**

This package is contains exactly the same elements as Package B, with the inclusion of Dynamic Web Template formatting. Each page in this package is attached to a Dynamic Web Template, for super fast site wide updates.

The use of include pages is used in both FrontPage packages as well.

Highlights: the Frontpage / Expressions (DWT) template package takes advantage of the ‘includes’ component, as well as the Dynamic Web Template formatting. The Dynamic Web Template pages also use ‘includes’ for the following common page elements:

  • Top link bar (text links)
  • Bottom link bar (text links)
  • Static icon link buttons
  • Vertical menu bar
  • Copyright information
  • Banner area or message boxes

Additional FrontPage specific elements (which require FrontPage server extensions on your hosted account)

  • Contact form page
  • Contact form confirmation page

The Frontpage / Expressions (DWT) template does not use FrontPage navigation, or FrontPage menu bars based on FrontPage navigation system. To ensure 100% XHTML Strict Validation, your template is designed with CSS menu bars and navigation and W3C compliant elements.

Package B:
Recommended for FrontPage 2000 / 2002

The basic FrontPage template that will work with all Microsoft products, including FP 2000, 2002, 2003 and Expression Web Designer.

If you would like a FrontPage / Expression web designer template that does NOT use the DWT template format, then this is the package for you. The only difference between this package and Package A is the use of the DWT format in Package A.

Highlights: the standard FrontPage template package takes advantage of the FrontPage ‘includes’ component. The template pages use ‘includes’ for the following common page elements:

• Top link bar (text links)
• Bottom link bar (text links)
• Static icon link buttons
• Vertical menu bar
• Copyright information
• Banner area or message boxes

Additional FrontPage specific elements (which require FrontPage server extensions on your hosted account)

• Contact form page
• Contact form confirmation page

Package C:

Recommended for Dreamweaver MX / 2004 / 8

We’ve provided one package for all Dreamweaver customers, and all packages use the Dynamic Web Template formatting. With Dreamweaver, it is so very easy to ‘detach’ a page from it’s Master DWT, we decided to create just the one package then if any one would like to use a NON DWT version, it would be just as quick , and less confusing to detach the pages, once the site is opened instead of offering various package types.

Highlights: the Dreamweaver (DWT) template package takes advantage of the Dreamweaver Library ‘.lbi’ files as well as the Dynamic Web Template formatting. The Dynamic Web Template pages also use ‘.lbi’ files for the following common page elements:

  • Top link bar (text links)
  • Bottom link bar (text links)
  • Static icon link buttons
  • Vertical menu bar
  • Copyright information
  • Banner area or message boxes

Additional elements (which require PHP server extensions on your hosted account)

  • Contact form page
  • Contact form confirmation page

The Dreamweaver (DWT) template does not use Dreamweaver Menu Bar navigation, or any JavaScript based menu bars To ensure 100% XHTML Strict Validation, your template is designed with CSS menu bars and navigation and W3C compliant elements.

Package D:

Recommended for all other HMTL editors (with Find & Replace functions)

We've included a standard, ready to use template for all HTML editors. Still using CSS formatting, the elements or components for this package are build directly into each web page, thus eliminating the need for Library files or includes. A standard HTML editor with a 'Find and Replace' function is recommended.
